There’s a whisper in the mists

In Lisfenora, Ireland, a strange fog has rolled in off the Atlantic. Along with the fog comes tales of the Grey Man, a predatory faery of local lore who snatches innocent souls into his deadly gloom.

And with the mists come murder

When a teenage boy dies in Detective Sergeant Danny Ahern’s arms, Danny finds himself pursuing his own grey man, a killer who becomes more elusive the closer Danny gets to the truth. A mute woman may be the key to solving the murder and helping Danny heal his own broken life, but first she must unlock the memories from her past.

"Whispers in the Mist is evocative of the rolling hills and mystical beliefs of Ireland—as well as a brooding tale of murder . . . A complex and thrilling story about family, love and healing."—Crimespree Magazine

“Rich, dark, and complex—every aspect of Alber’s second novel rises above the commonplace. The mystery’s resolution is expertly teased from layers of motive, obligation, attraction and repulsion, all in a memorably atmospheric setting.”—Sophie Littlefield, bestselling author of The Guilty One

Murder comes in threes to a village in County Clare. It's hard for DS Danny Ahern to reassure his young son that the boy didn't see the Grey Man, the legendary evil spirit that lives in the mist and sucks the life out of its victims. The child insists that he saw the spirit dragging someone past the house. Danny almost becomes a believer when a nameless teenage boy found in a pasture dies in his arms. Trained in hardheaded police work, Danny still wonders when he sees sparrows taking flight; the local myth is that they're soul bearers. Nor can he shake the feeling that worse is yet to come. It should be a happy time: it's the September Matchmaking Festival, which turns his village of Lisfenora into a tourist attraction every year and brings locals and strangers to Liam the Matchmaker. Liam's assisted by his American daughter, Merrit Chase, still an outsider a year after her first meeting with Liam. Now someone's painted "slag" on her car in magenta, a reference to the part Merrit supposedly played in Danny's separation from his wife. The owner of a high-end gift store also complains about graffiti, but with the murder of Lost Boy on his hands, Danny has no time for vandalism. Dermot McNamara and his sister, Gemma, may have some answers. They've come to the village to find John McIlvoy, the stepfather who killed their mother. Gemma, who witnessed the murder, has been selectively mute ever since. Dermot claims that Lost Boy was the cousin who was helping them find McIlvoy, the designer of a pendant and a pair of earrings that are key to the case. Before Danny can figure out why, his foreboding comes true with two more homicides and a tangle of blackmail, betrayal, and revenge. A worthy successor to Kilmoon (2014) in tone, mood, complexity, and keen insight into human failures and triumphs.

In the small Irish town of Lisfenora, DS Danny Ahern tries to adjust to his new life, separated from his clinically depressed wife and their son, who suffers from anxiety. It is September and time for the annual matchmaking fair that brings tourists from near and far to tiny Lisfenora. Fog rolls in off the Atlantic, and with it comes rumors of the legendary Grey Man, who sucks souls from his victims. When a teenage boy dies in Danny's arms, he must find the killer and cope with his own personal demons. And then another boy becomes a victim. Although this sophomore outing makes references to the events in Alber's debut, Kilmoon, this atmospheric mystery can be read as a stand-alone. The author expertly captures the claustrophobic feel of life in a close-knit, insular community, and the struggles of her characters adds depth and power. VERDICT A first-rate crime novel that will satisfy fans of Dicey Deere and Bartholomew Gill.
